Excel freezing is usually caused by large files, add-ins, corrupted data, or insufficient resources. ## Fix 1: Wait Sometimes Excel is processing a large calculation. The title bar shows "(Not Responding)" but it may recover in a few minutes. Wait at least 2 to 3 minutes before force-closing. ## Fix 2: Open in Safe Mode 1. Close Excel completely. 2. Press **Win + R**, type `excel /safe`, press Enter. 3. Try opening your file. If it works in Safe Mode, the issue is an add-in. ## Fix 3: Disable Add-ins 1. In Excel, go to **File > Options > Add-ins**. 2. At the bottom, select **COM Add-ins** and click **Go**. 3. Uncheck all add-ins and click **OK**. 4. Restart Excel normally and test. 5. Re-enable add-ins one at a time to find the culprit. ## Fix 4: Repair Office 1. Go to **Settings > Apps > Installed apps**. 2. Find Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365. 3. Click the three dots > **Modify** (or **Repair**). 4. Choose **Quick Repair** first. If that does not help, try **Online Repair**. ## Fix 5: Check the File If only one file causes the problem: Open Excel first (without the file), then use **File > Open** and select the file. Try opening the file on another computer to rule out file corruption. If the file is on a network drive, copy it to your local drive and open it from there. Network latency can cause Excel to freeze. ## Fix 6: Update Office Go to **File > Account > Update Options > Update Now**. ## Fix 7: Check File Size and Complexity Files over 20 to 50 MB with thousands of formulas, pivot tables, conditional formatting rules, or external data connections can overwhelm Excel. Simplify the file by removing unused worksheets, clearing unnecessary formatting, and breaking large files into smaller ones. ## When to Contact IT If Excel crashes consistently across multiple files, the installation may need repair or reinstallation. Your IT provider can also check for Group Policy settings or system resource issues affecting Office performance.
