When an iPhone or iPad does not charge, the problem is usually the cable, the port, or a software glitch. Hardware failure is less common. ## Fix 1: Try a Different Cable Lightning and USB-C cables degrade over time, especially near the connectors. Try a different Apple-branded or MFi-certified cable. Non-certified cables may not charge reliably or may stop working after iOS updates. ## Fix 2: Try a Different Power Adapter Use the adapter that came with the device or an Apple-certified adapter. Wall adapters degrade. Try a different one. Also try charging from a computer USB port to test whether the issue is the adapter or the device. ## Fix 3: Clean the Charging Port Lint, dust, and debris accumulate in the charging port over time, especially if the device goes in and out of pockets. 1. Power off the device. 2. Use a wooden or plastic toothpick to gently remove debris from the port. Do not use metal objects. 3. Use compressed air to blow out remaining dust. 4. Try charging again. This is one of the most common fixes. Even a small amount of lint can prevent a solid connection. ## Fix 4: Force Restart A software freeze can prevent charging. **iPhone 8 and newer (including all Face ID models):** 1. Press and quickly release the **Volume Up** button. 2. Press and quickly release the **Volume Down** button. 3. Press and hold the **Side button** until the Apple logo appears. **iPhone 7:** Hold **Volume Down** and **Side button** together until the Apple logo appears. **iPad with Home button:** Hold **Home** and **Top** button together until the Apple logo appears. **iPad without Home button:** Press Volume Up, press Volume Down, then hold the Top button until the Apple logo appears. ## Fix 5: Check for Liquid or Temperature Warning If the device shows a **liquid detected** warning, do not force charge. Let the port dry completely (at least several hours). If the device shows a **temperature warning**, let it cool down. Charging pauses when the device is too hot. ## Fix 6: Update iOS Go to **Settings > General > Software Update** and install any available updates. Some charging issues are fixed through software updates. ## Fix 7: Check Battery Health Go to **Settings > Battery > Battery Health and Charging**. If Maximum Capacity is below 80%, the battery is significantly degraded and may not hold a charge well. Apple recommends battery replacement at this point. ## When to Contact IT or Apple If none of the above fixes work, the charging port hardware or battery may need repair. If the device is under warranty or AppleCare, contact Apple Support. If it is a work device managed by your organization, contact your IT provider first.
