Since the January 2026 Windows updates, many users with Nvidia GeForce RTX 30 and 40 series graphics cards experienced random black screen crashes. The screen would go black for several seconds, sometimes 10-15 seconds, before returning. Some users also saw zooming animations as if a monitor was powering on/off.
The issue was particularly bad during gaming, with reports of frame rate drops, stuttering, and graphical artifacts. In severe cases, the system would crash with a KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE error.
The Fix: Install KB5077181
Microsoft's February 2026 Patch Tuesday update (KB5077181) specifically addresses the Nvidia black screen issue.
- Open Settings > Windows Update
- Click "Check for updates"
- Install KB5077181
- Restart your computer
After installing, your build should be 26200.7840 or higher (check in Settings > System > About).
Also Update Your Nvidia Driver
For best results, update your GPU driver after installing the Windows update:
- Open GeForce Experience or download from nvidia.com/drivers
- Install the latest Game Ready Driver (WHQL-signed)
- Choose "Clean installation" for best results
- Restart your computer
If Issues Persist: Clean Driver Reinstall
If you're still having problems after updating both Windows and Nvidia drivers, perform a clean driver reinstall:
- Download Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) from guru3d.com
- Download the latest Nvidia driver but don't install yet
- Boot into Safe Mode (Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup)
- Run DDU and select "Clean and restart"
- After restart, install the fresh Nvidia driver
- Restart again
Workarounds If You Can't Update
If you need to delay the Windows update for any reason:
- Roll back Nvidia driver: If the issue started after a driver update, go to Device Manager > Display adapters > right-click your GPU > Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver
- Disable hardware acceleration: In Chrome, Edge, or other apps, turn off hardware acceleration in settings
- Reduce monitor refresh rate: Try 60Hz instead of higher refresh rates temporarily
- Use a single monitor: Multi-monitor setups were more affected; disconnect extra displays while troubleshooting
What KB5077181 Fixed
The February update addressed several graphics-related issues:
- Black screen problem during login or after startup
- Screen flickering during monitor swaps or resolution changes
- Gaming performance stutters and frame rate drops
- Explorer.exe crashes related to graphics operations
- Taskbar and Start menu freezes
Known Issues with KB5077181
While the update fixes the black screen bug, some users have reported new issues:
- Boot loops on certain systems (uninstall via WinRE if affected)
- Network connectivity problems (DHCP-related)
- Installation errors (try the Windows Update Troubleshooter)
