Webcam issues on Windows are usually caused by privacy settings, the wrong camera being selected, or driver problems. ## Check the Basics 1. **Is the camera physically covered?** Many laptops have a privacy slider or shutter over the webcam. Check for a small switch near the camera. 2. **Is an external camera plugged in?** Try a different USB port. Try without a USB hub. 3. **Does the camera indicator light turn on?** If the light turns on but you see no video, the issue is software. If the light does not turn on at all, the issue may be hardware or privacy settings. ## Fix 1: Check Privacy Settings Windows 11 has privacy controls that can block camera access. 1. Go to **Settings > Privacy and security > Camera**. 2. Make sure **Camera access** is toggled on. 3. Make sure **Let apps access your camera** is toggled on. 4. Scroll down and verify the specific app (Teams, Zoom, Chrome) has access. ## Fix 2: Check the App's Camera Settings Each video app has its own camera selection. **Teams:** Settings > Devices > Camera. Select the correct camera. **Zoom:** Settings > Video > Camera. Select the correct camera. **Google Meet:** Settings > Video > Camera. If you have multiple cameras (built-in plus external), the wrong one may be selected. ## Fix 3: Close Other Apps Using the Camera Only one application can use the camera at a time. If Zoom is using the camera, Teams cannot access it. Close any other video applications before opening the one you need. ## Fix 4: Update the Camera Driver 1. Open **Device Manager** (right-click Start > Device Manager). 2. Expand **Cameras** or **Imaging Devices**. 3. Right-click your camera and select **Update driver > Search automatically**. 4. If no update is found, try **Uninstall device**, restart, and let Windows reinstall the driver. ## Fix 5: Check for Physical Keyboard Toggle Some laptops have a keyboard shortcut to enable/disable the camera. Common keys: **F8** (with Fn key) on some Lenovo laptops. **F10** (with Fn key) on some HP laptops. Check your laptop model's documentation for the camera toggle key. ## Fix 6: Test in the Camera App Open the **Camera** app from the Start menu. If the camera works here but not in another application, the issue is with that specific application's settings or permissions. ## When to Contact IT If the camera does not appear in Device Manager at all, the hardware may have failed or a BIOS setting may have disabled it. On managed devices, Group Policy or Intune may restrict camera access. Contact your IT provider.
