After the January 2026 security update, some Windows 11 devices started experiencing boot failures. The screen goes black and displays: "Your device ran into a problem and needs to restart. You can restart." But restarting just brings you back to the same error - a boot loop.
This issue was caused by a failed installation of the December 2025 update leaving devices in an "improper state." When January's update tried to install on top of this, the system became unbootable.
How to Access Windows Recovery Environment
Since your PC won't boot normally, you need to force it into the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE):
- Power on your PC
- When you see the Windows logo (before the error), hold the power button to force shutdown
- Repeat this 2-3 times
- On the next boot, Windows will enter "Preparing Automatic Repair"
- Click "Advanced options" when prompted
Method 1: Uninstall the Problem Update
Once in WinRE:
- Click Troubleshoot
- Click Advanced options
- Click Uninstall Updates
- Click "Uninstall latest quality update"
- Follow the prompts to uninstall
- Restart your PC
This removes the January update and should restore your system to a bootable state.
Method 2: Use System Restore
If uninstalling updates doesn't work:
- In WinRE, go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options
- Click System Restore
- Select your user account and enter your password
- Choose a restore point from before the problematic update
- Follow the prompts to restore
Method 3: Startup Repair
Sometimes the Startup Repair tool can fix boot issues:
- In WinRE, go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options
- Click Startup Repair
- Let it run (this can take 15-30 minutes)
- Restart when prompted
Method 4: Boot from Installation Media
If you can't access WinRE through the automatic method:
- Create Windows 11 installation media on another PC using the Media Creation Tool
- Boot your affected PC from the USB drive
- On the first screen, click "Repair your computer" (bottom left)
- This takes you to the same recovery options
After Recovery: Prevent the Issue
Once your system is booting again:
- Let Windows fully load and settle
- Run Windows Update and install KB5078127 or later (the fixed version)
- Before rebooting, run System File Checker: open Command Prompt as admin and run
sfc /scannow - Then run DISM:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth - Now restart and let the update complete
If Nothing Works: Keep Your Files
As a last resort, you can reset Windows while keeping your files:
- In WinRE, go to Troubleshoot
- Click "Reset this PC"
- Select "Keep my files"
- Choose "Cloud download" or "Local reinstall"
- Follow the prompts
This reinstalls Windows but preserves your documents, pictures, and other personal files. You'll need to reinstall applications.
