Word documents that will not open are usually caused by file corruption, Protected View, or a problem with the Word installation. ## Fix 1: Disable Protected View Protected View blocks editing of files downloaded from the internet or received via email. Sometimes it blocks the file entirely. 1. Open Word (without the problem file). 2. Go to **File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings**. 3. Click **Protected View**. 4. Uncheck all three options temporarily. 5. Click **OK** and try opening the file. 6. Re-enable Protected View after opening the file. ## Fix 2: Open and Repair 1. Open Word. 2. Go to **File > Open > Browse**. 3. Select the problem file. 4. Click the dropdown arrow next to the **Open** button. 5. Select **Open and Repair**. ## Fix 3: Try Opening in a Different Application If Word will not open the file, try: Google Docs (upload to Google Drive and open). LibreOffice Writer (free download from libreoffice.org). Word Online at office.com. If the file opens in another application, the problem is with your Word installation, not the file. ## Fix 4: Check File Extension Make sure the file has the correct extension: .docx for modern Word documents. .doc for older Word documents. If the extension is missing or wrong, right-click the file, rename it, and add the correct extension. ## Fix 5: Repair Office 1. Go to **Settings > Apps > Installed apps**. 2. Find Microsoft Office/365. 3. Click **Modify > Quick Repair** or **Online Repair**. ## Fix 6: Check File Location If the file is on a network drive, SharePoint, or OneDrive and will not open, try: Copy the file to your local Desktop and open it from there. Check your internet connection (for cloud files). Open the file from the web version of Word at office.com. ## When to Contact IT If no Word documents open at all (not just one file), the Word installation may be corrupted. Your IT provider can repair or reinstall Office. If a specific file is critical and corrupted, IT may be able to recover content from a backup or previous version.
