Dark mode changes the interface from light backgrounds to dark backgrounds throughout the operating system and supported applications. ## Windows 11 1. Right-click the Desktop and select **Personalize** (or go to Settings > Personalization). 2. Click **Colors**. 3. Under **Choose your mode**, select **Dark**. 4. Windows, File Explorer, Settings, and supported apps will switch to dark mode. ### Dark Mode for Individual Apps Some apps have their own dark mode setting: **Microsoft Office:** File > Account > Office Theme > Dark Gray or Black. **Chrome:** Settings > Appearance > choose Dark. **Edge:** Settings > Appearance > choose Dark. ## macOS 1. Click **Apple menu > System Settings > Appearance**. 2. Select **Dark**. 3. Or select **Auto** to switch between light and dark based on time of day. ### Dark Mode for Individual Apps **Chrome on Mac:** Chrome follows the macOS system setting automatically. **Safari:** Follows system setting automatically. **Microsoft Office on Mac:** Follows system setting or set in Office Preferences > General > Appearance. ## Benefits **Reduced eye strain** in low-light environments. **Battery savings** on laptops and phones with OLED or AMOLED screens (dark pixels use less power). **Personal preference.** Some people find dark mode easier to read. Others find light mode clearer. Use what works best for you. ## Note Not all applications support dark mode. Some older or specialized applications will still display with light backgrounds regardless of the system setting.
