Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 10 will reach end of support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Windows 10 will no longer receive security updates, leaving systems vulnerable to newly discovered threats. If your business still has computers running Windows 10, it is time to plan your transition.
What End of Support Means
- No more security patches: New vulnerabilities will not be fixed
- Compliance risk: Running unsupported software may violate HIPAA, PCI DSS, and other standards
- Cyber insurance impact: Insurers may deny claims if a breach occurs on unsupported systems
- Software compatibility: New versions of business software may stop supporting Windows 10
Your Options
Option 1: Upgrade to Windows 11
If your hardware meets Windows 11 requirements (TPM 2.0, compatible processor, Secure Boot), upgrading is the most straightforward path. The upgrade is free for licensed Windows 10 machines.
Option 2: Replace Hardware
If your computers do not meet Windows 11 requirements, you will need to plan hardware replacements. New computers ship with Windows 11 pre-installed.
Option 3: Extended Security Updates
Microsoft has announced that Extended Security Updates (ESU) will be available for Windows 10 for an additional fee. This should be considered a temporary bridge, not a long-term solution.
Planning Your Migration
Step 1: Inventory (Do This Now)
Identify every Windows 10 machine. For each one, determine if it is compatible with Windows 11, how old it is, what software it runs, and who uses it.
Step 2: Test Compatibility
Verify that all your business applications work correctly on Windows 11. Most modern software is compatible, but legacy applications sometimes have issues.
Step 3: Budget
Calculate the cost of upgrades and replacements. Budget for hardware, software upgrades, and the labor for deployment and training.
Step 4: Schedule the Rollout
Plan a phased migration that minimizes business disruption. Start with compatible machines, then replace incompatible hardware over time.
Do Not Wait Until the Last Minute
Rushing a migration will be stressful, expensive, and risky. Starting now gives you time to plan, budget, and execute the transition smoothly.
