Windows 10 is the operating system running on most business computers today, but the majority of users barely scratch the surface of what it can do. Here are ten tips that can make a real difference in your daily productivity.
1. Use Virtual Desktops
Press Win + Tab to access Task View, then click "New Desktop" at the top. This lets you organize different projects on separate desktops. Keep your email and communication apps on one desktop, your main project on another, and research on a third. Switch between them with Ctrl + Win + Left/Right Arrow.
2. Master Snap Layouts
Drag a window to the edge of your screen to snap it into place, or use Win + Arrow Keys to arrange windows quickly. This is especially useful on larger monitors where you want to see multiple applications side by side.
3. Use the Clipboard History
Press Win + V instead of Ctrl + V to access your clipboard history. This keeps a record of everything you have copied, so you can paste items from earlier without having to go back and copy them again. Enable this feature in Settings under System > Clipboard.
4. Quick Access to Settings
Right-click the Start button (or press Win + X) to access a power user menu with quick links to Device Manager, Disk Management, Event Viewer, and other tools that normally take several clicks to find.
5. Pin Frequently Used Folders
In File Explorer, right-click any folder and select "Pin to Quick access." This puts your most-used folders right at the top of the navigation pane so you can get to them in one click.
6. Use Focus Assist
Go to Settings > System > Focus Assist to configure quiet hours when notifications are silenced. You can set it to activate automatically during certain hours or when you are duplicating your display for a presentation.
7. Screenshot Like a Pro
Press Win + Shift + S to open the Snipping Tool overlay. You can capture a rectangular area, freeform shape, specific window, or your entire screen. The screenshot goes to your clipboard for immediate pasting.
8. Search Faster
Just press the Win key and start typing. Windows Search finds applications, files, settings, and even web results. It is the fastest way to open any program or find a document you cannot locate.
9. Night Light for Late Work
If you work in the evening, enable Night Light under Settings > System > Display. It reduces blue light from your screen, which can help reduce eye strain and improve sleep quality after late work sessions.
10. Keep Your PC Fast with Storage Sense
Go to Settings > System > Storage and enable Storage Sense. It automatically cleans up temporary files, empties the Recycle Bin, and removes old downloads. This helps prevent the gradual slowdown that comes from accumulated junk files.
